Preparing For Your Spray Tan

Have you ever had a spray tan that hasn’t turned out the way you had hoped? Then 9/10 it’s because these few simple steps weren’t followed. Many of us don’t realise that in order for you to achieve a smooth flawless tan that lasts then good preparation and aftercare is key. Most problems occur after tanning because the skin is not correctly prepared and a good moisturising routine is not established.

If you follow these few simple steps before you have your tan then you will look and feel fabulous!

Before

  • 24 hours before your tan you will need to exfoliate paying particular attention to elbows, knees, ankles, and any problem areas.
  • To prevent staining of nails and toenails it is best to paint them especially if they are acrylics or similar.
  • Waxing / shaving needs to be done at least 24 hours before your treatment. This allows time for the pores to close if this is not adhered to then you may see dotting in the pores.
  • It is recommended not to moisturise or use any skin lotions on the day of your tan as these will act as a barrier.
  • Make-up, deodorant, lotions, etc need to be removed prior to your tan.

After

  • You will need to wear loose dark clothing for after your tan, any tight clothing or underwear is likely to cause marks.
  • Wear loose fitting shoes or flip-flops.
  • The tan will take 8 hours to develop so do not shower or bathe during the development period.
  • Do not swim or exercise during development.
  • After your tan the therapist will remove any excess tan from your hands and show you that they are clear of tanning solution. If any marks appear on your hands then this is due to touching the skin during the development period. To stop this happening I always advise to wear loose socks over your hands in bed.
  • After showering pat dry and moisturise.
  • You will need to moisturise day and night and whenever possible, this helps your tan last.
  • After 5 days it is time to exfoliate, this removes any dead skin and helps absorb moisturiser.
  • Remember the longer you are in water the faster your tan will fade.
